My students voted this as their most useful revision resource for A Christmas Carol. First ask students to annotate the top 50 quotations in the text and then give out the answer sheet to check their responses. For weaker students, there is a matching version where students match the 50 quotations to 50 brief explanations. Also contains more advanced notes on my top 20 quotations linked to A01, A02 and A03. For students wanting a comprehensive knowledge of the text there is also a 100 quotation version with meanings, methods and message briefly explained for all 100 quotations.

The collection has grown to 11 consistently thoughtful and sometimes perceptive and assured exam responses to A Christmas Carol. I am not going to claim they are grade 9 because the grade boundaries are volatile but all the essays are coherent, well-argued responses with thoughtful and often perceptive exploration of methods, word choices and writer’s wider ideas. All responses have been formatted to snugly fit onto one page for ease of printing. I have made up my own extracts and questions. They include responses on places in the novel, Cratchits, Scrooge’s transformation, ghosts.

Tier 1 difficulty (I do): Big idea, topic sentences and quotations are provided. Students add the analysis of the quotations. Tier 2 difficulty (We do): Students must choose 2 quotations to support each topic sentence and analyse the quotations. Tier 3 difficulty (You do): Students have to generate the big idea, the topic sentences, 2 quotations a paragraph and the quotation analysis.

Simple but effective revision lesson. Starter: Ask students to try and remember quotations for the main characters using the A4 worksheet. 10 Romeo, 10 Juliet, 5 Capulet, 5 Tybalt, 5 Friar, 5 Mercutio. Main: Give out the list of the 40 best quotations on the A3 sheet and ask students to analyse the quotations. Review: Go through answers which appear on the PowerPoint one by one on each mouse click. This revision lesson includes 9 possible exam questions for English language paper 2 writing. For each task, students are asked to come up with 3 ideas and to write an effective opening paragraph. The starter activity asks students to analyse 9 effective openings to letters, articles and speeches.
